They gave it their best shot

Due to equipment failures and problems with the autopilot and windvane, Doug and Monica have decided to start the “iron genoa” and retire from the Bermuda 1-2.

They’ll file an update when they reach Newport. If we have anything to report in the meantime, we’ll post it here.

Oh NO! This could be compared to withdrawing life support! I have eagerly looked forward to Doug’s pearls of wisdom since the race started, and now he’s vanished (except for that striking blue (on my monitor) dot that will be soon overtaking the remaining fleet.

They have made a wise decision, however. There is no glory peristing with self-flagellation after a certain point. They both certainly had an adventure, and a great many armchair sailors were aboard for the wild and wet ride. I don’t know how he continued to write under such trying conditions.

I have been involved with this race since its inception, I have run the event, I have raced in the event, but I have never enjoyed it as much as seen and experienced through the eyes and words of Doug. What a story-weaver! Kudos to the powers that be who supported and encouraged this to happen.

    Thank you,
    Peggy

You did a heck of a job on both your sailing and writing. We are all so proud of you and can’t wait till you get home and tell us all you didn’t write down. Be safe on your way back, and thanks for taking us along.

Peggy said it all. We’re disappointed in the outcome but agree with your decision. It’s a wise move under the circumstances. We were with you all the way. Thanks for sharing this with us & we’re looking forward to hearing from you again.

This is not the end but the beginning of your next adventure.
